New domain name?

Post by AngharadTy »

The discussion on this started <a href=http://kamil.slashcity.com/forum/viewto ... =0>here</a> (which is very good to read for background) and feel free to continue it here, in this new thread. Please answer the poll, which is very general, and after it's decided we can get into the nitty-gritty of it.

Let me know if I was too vague, somewhere--my brain feels fuzzy. And I'm not even drunk! What's up with that.

My attitude is "all or nothing", really - if it's not Neocolours.something , it's not good. No "theneocolours", no "Neocolours", no "neocolourz", no "ncolours".

I think thenc.co.uk is my favourite domain name choice after "neocolours.something", which I think isn't possible because it's mostly taken already yes?

*votes for the 'TheNC' option*

But, um, I don't really know why. Mostly it's because that's what I refer to it as anyway, so it would be no change for me.

I like keeping Neocolours in the name. Sam may have gone, but the people are still here. They make up the site, the rest is just coding. That sounds right in my head, but if it is offensive, I apologize.

You all have given Sam every opportunity to fix this. I don't think that part matters, as long as you credit Sam for the ideas and things.

I don't know anything about websites, but I am willing to help out in anyway I can. Credit Card? Cheering section? Whatever y'all need. :)

I voted for thenc, since as I said in the last thread I think it would be best to have something different for the url (and because I don't think the options for things with neocolours are very good). Basically, I agree with Madge.

It may be helpful to think of PPT - they did something very similar, right? New domain name, but kept the site essentially the same. And look how popular they are ;)

I voted thenc also. It's catchy and easy to remember.

Also, I don't think we should email Sam anymore. It is obvious he does not want to talk to us, or something a long those lines. Its a waste of time.

We would still be able to call the pages themselves "Neocolours," and to use the pretty Jazzy-banner or a new one that says the full word "Neocolours." I don't much care how we <i>navigate</i> to the pages; I don't think it detracts to have to type t-h-e-n-c instead of n-e-o-c-etc. And hey, thenc is shorter. Yay for lazy. ^_^
Also, I don't think we should email Sam anymore. It is obvious he does not want to talk to us, or something else.
That's not necessarily true--he has said in the past that a lot of mails get stuck/undelivered/caught by spam bots/whatever.

I still don't like thenc. Then C. :P

But the point that someone brought up on the other thread about the possibility of spending the money and then having it go to waste if we needed to change it has brought me to a compromise. I may not like it, but I dislike wasting money even more. Also, I prefer .net to .co.uk

We could always make the main site the-nc.net and someone (like me if I cant think of a better thing to spend my allowance on) could get thenc.net and redirect it to the main site. That would get rid of the only objection I saw to a dash in the name, though it would be more money and such, but still a possibility. It wouldnt need nearly as much bandwidth and space and such as the main site, so it should be pretty cheap. I need to set up a site for my mom anyway...

I'm cheering for thenc.co.uk or thenc.net, but just a thought.

I think it'd be kind of neat if we got a new name.. Since we really don't know if Sam will mind, plus it's a new site. Otherwise thenc I guess.. If he doesn't like us being neocolours then nc could stand for NeoCanvas or something. :P

thenc or somthing similar because then we wouldn't have to go with some obscure TLD like .info or .cc

In the other thread I also came up with neonc, where the first "neo" would say that is a new necolours, maybe that could be an option if people don't like to have the "the" or read it as then c as Figment said.

neocolours.* is not available in an acceptable way - there's only some country-specific ones, and I don't see that being an option, not in the least because I don't feel like being associated with some random country when there's no reason for it.

This means that going for any domain name containing the full name 'Neocolours' would be expanded - theneocolours.*, Neocolours.*, or other similar ones.

First of all, these would become too long and unwieldy. http://www.theneocolours.co.uk is 23 characters long, won't fit on a banner, and quite simply isn't memorable. If people can't remember the URL, they're not going to visit. Furthermore, if we were to use another version of it, we could not refer to it as Neocolours anymore. If the URL is, say, Neocolours.com, you can't call the site Neocolours anymore, no, we are now suddenly called Neocolours. If you don't want to be Neocolours anymore, then go for such a domain.

With a acronym-like version, such as the-nc.*, thenc.*, nnc.* (New NeoColours?), or whatever else occurs to us, we can actually keep Neocolours referenced in the name. We have the option of changing what the acronym refers to, if that's what we prefer. We have an URL that is a whole lot easier to type and to remember. And we've still got a lot of options as to what top-level domain we are going to use, rather than being restricted to some .tv adress.

As for contacting Sam - I recall calling him having a much better effect the last time we tried. Maybe it's time to do that again instead of mailing?

In response, directly, to sgt_pooh: This is not, I repeat not, about the name of the site itself. However the domain name will be expanded, the name itself can still contain 'Neocolours' if that's what is decided on, until Sam visits. This is about the domain name alone - the bit that you enter in the adress bar.

And Tiel - if the host is poked a bit, it is quite easy to allow it to accept traffic from multiple domains, so that only the DNS would need to be hosted. It's what is currently happening for kamil.slashcity.com/nc.empireirc.net

incidentally unless anyone is willing to start a company with an office in New Caledonia, anything.nc is out ;0)

I think NeoCanvas is the best replacement name I've heard suggested in case Sam does object to Neocolours. And it does fit nicely with my possible Sekrit Project.
