Heilos - try working at 128x128 using a 3pixel brush. You're liable to put too much detail into items that size which get lost in the resize. Also, your colours are coming out very saturated in the base and a bit flat/greyish in the shading. Try using softer colours for the base, and when shading, pick different colours to the base colour and lay them over the base using multiply layers and fiddle with the opacity. I did this recently in my sensual showcase trunk - the female long hair was shaded with a pinkish brown to keep the whole thing looking very soft, but the long hair from the male side was shaded with a lavender like colour which gave it a much richer sort of look.

Also, try to keep in mind where your lightsource is, and don't be afraid to shade in large areas leaving no base showing if they are far away/obstructed from the lightsource.

Also, highlights work really well when they're gentler - try to avoid using white or a lighter colour than what you're putting the highlight on. For example, highlight orange with yellow, or a dark purple with maybe a cyan colour - experiment! I notice especially on the green dragon that the highlights seem to be all placed along the lineart - I would generally avoid this, as it gives a kind of plasticy effect - with something like a dragon, you can highlight little scales all the way down one side of it's body. With a furry animal you can draw in strands of hair as highlights. Another place to experiment with different techniques :)

Try practicing with different shades and highlights on one image - slide the hue adjuster across until you start getting effects that you like. I still do it all the time, and I'm still learning all the time! Good luck though, you're definitely improving all the time!

WOW, thank you so much for that wonderful crit rah ^^
That helps a lot, I wasn't sure if I was working too big since I went ahead
and looked up items that had been posted by other subeta artists on deviantart
and some ranged from 256X256 to the 128X128 size. I totally see what you mean
though with the detail, a lot of it got lost in the resize and I wasn't sure
how to fix that since the official items seem soft but still definable.

So many good tips, i'll be sure to make up a new batch when I get the chance
since artist applications probably won't be open for awhile anyway XD

Not really much to show lately, just some more overlays, if you guys are getting
tired of these I can always post some of my personal art XD

Steampunk Kora for Jessi, Chibi Jollin with African Wild Dog colors, and a Galactic Jollin made into DarkMatter

ImageImageImage

Also a preview for another overlay i'm working on for myself for an up coming pet i'll be getting.
I'd like to see who can guess what character this is going to be based off of ;D

I love looking at your overlays! Don't you ever stop showing them off. They're so pretty. **stares**

I'm loving the steam punk kora. It's just so wicked looking. Just another of Jessi's pets for me to drool over. XD
As for your preview, it makes me think of the panther from Cardcaptor Sakura. I can't rightly remember the name right now. ^-^;

Back again with some more art, an actual redraw this time lol

Now I don't usually do custom overlays but since oddishness lost one of her fav pet overlays (and personally one of my favs) due to certain circumstances and asked me for an overlay edit, I wanted to try more then just my usual edits, plus it's just good practice anyway c: I need to get in the habit of doing a bit thicker lines but overall i'm happy with this c:

Chelsea had already shown me Progs, of course, but you really did a great job with him, Heilos! He looks wonderful, I like it even more than his original overlay. The shading is lovely!

Thanks for the feedback guys c: I've been really motivated to keep doing
customs lately and I wanted to redo an overlayfor my only non-fan related
pet Helios. Forgive the odd perspective, I was trying to do a more forward,
proud pose but I think it could have worked out better XD

Re: Heilos art thread c: now with edits and customs

Post by Heilos »

Nothing new really, just another custom, this is my first time drawing
a legeica type of pet c: I'm having a lot of fun doing customs for people
along with edits ^^
