New Mutant Gelert?
All poses (with old one for comparison)
I... am at a loss for words.
I think the old mutant gelert is so much better than this thing. So much. I also have a feeling I might be in the minority about this one.
Who the hell saw this coming, anyway? O_o

Make the old mutant darigan. Problem solved
The new one is creepy but also decidingly mutant looking. I prefer the old one but whatever

The old one was awesome, but it didn't look mutant. I'm pleased that they're paying attention to this common problem, as the new version is more melancholy and more alien...both key mutant features in my opinion. It isn't really impressive on its own, though, and could stand to be more sickly (It would have rocked with emaciated ribs)
If they're going to do anything with the bori, just take off its hair. I liked the giant pillbug shell, but not its shaggy green dog face. A hulking armored mutant bori with naked-mole-rat skin would be fine.

My first thought: it's reminiscent of Scarmiglione as rendered in FFIV:

What makes it not look very mutant is the face, I think - it reminds me too much of Scooby Doo on a bad day with some tentacles burrowing in his skull. Exposing the skull or some brains would tie this mutant together and make it certifiably awesome.
(Since I own the pet Scarmiglione, it'd be awesome to paint him this, but I'll stick with the Darigan Aisha I had planned.)

Wow, just wow. I never liked the old Mutant Gelert, it wasn't looking very Mutant to me, more like Darigan. But this... is awesome. I love everything about it. Every poses are great, it has an awesome expression, it got worm-like tail/ears, and it looks like a sort of hyena. It's so great that I'm tempted to change Paco (my Mutant Meerca) into this (he was a Red Gelert when I made him)

Re: New Mutant Gelert?
Nope, I concur Jess. The old mutant looked vicious and rabid. This new one, while it does fit the "mutant" theme a little better, it reminds me more of a cross between a Great Dane and a prehistoric ram---and yes, the posture definitely reminds me of a hyena slouch. I do hate to see such a wonderfully drawn gelert go to waste. And yes, if nothing else, replace that crappy Darigan we have now with old mutant, or maybe even Halloween. Old mutant would probably make a better Halloween than Darigan.jessibean wrote:

Ahh, thank you! I kept saying it looked like a cross between a goat and a bull or something similar. It looks okay, but it also looks so.. timid. Mutant pets should at least look slightly conniving - they're supposed to be creations of Sloth's, after all >>;Usul_Princess wrote:Nope, I concur Jess. The old mutant looked vicious and rabid. haha! that's what Derek said, too. And then I read what you said to him, and he said, "Yes! Holy crap." I don't know what that means, except that Cyro is cool. ^_~Cyro wrote:My first thought: it's reminiscent of Scarmiglione as rendered in FFIV
I looooove this. I didn't much care for the original mutant Gelert, because it didn't seem like a mutant, which Scythe has already covered neatly. I want this, though. I want this badly. I will get this. *plots*
You know, I really liked the old Mutant Gelert, and am really sad to see it go (though maybe the design will get revived as Tyrannian or something)... I still really, really like this one. Partly because it's much more skuzzy and weird-looking (I like "weird" mutants more than plain ol' "scary" mutants)...
...but mostly because this pet looks almost EXACTLY like this mutant dog/rat monster from a comic/story thing I'm working on (and no, I don't have a picture of it scanned right now). Right down to the tentacle ears, hairless tail, hunched back and black spikes. The resemblance is kinda creepy actually, the only real difference is that my character has multiple eyes and more rat-like feet. O_o
I'm tempted to get one and name it after said character now. (though now I'm afraid people will say I copied off the gelert when my idea came months earlier whoamg)

Hrm. Maybe it was because I didn't quite like the old one, but I do love this new one a lot better. The art is fantastic and the expressions are spot on. I love looking at a lot of the poses - great emotions. The design is quite awesome, too, as it does look like a hyena type thing. Awesome all around.
If I had room, I'd consider getting one! It makes me feel like drawing one, which is a major plus for me. xD
