Belief-O-Matic

EDIT: I forgot to inclue the URL, I am pretty dumb! Here it is: http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainment/ ... Matic.aspx ... I am surprised half a dozen people actually found it without the link, go those people!

Well, I have found something in the internets, called the Belief-O-Matic. It takes your beliefs and shows how similar they are to mainstream and not-so-mainstream religions and whatnot.

There are lots of interesting things about it - for example, lots of Atheists share 60% or so with a liberal christian whilst fundamentalist Christians share 40% with a liberal Christian, which is pretty cool.

I was interested by this and want to see whateverybody else has as their spectrumt hing, and also avoid studying for my exams.

So give it a crack and post your results, as well as how you would describe yourself and what you think is interesting about your results. Let's not, um, get all angry at each other for stuff, we should all be friendly and happy. OK? That is my rule!

Here's mine. I self-identify as an Atheist, with no more words or bells and whistles added to that, at least not yet.

1. Secular Humanism (100%)
2. Unitarian Universalism (88%)
3. Nontheist (79%)
4. Liberal Quakers (74%)
5. Theravada Buddhism (74%)
6. Neo-Pagan (69%)
7. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (59%)
8. Taoism (53%)
9. Reform Judaism (52%)
10. Sikhism (48%)
11. Orthodox Quaker (45%)
12. New Age (44%)
13. Mahayana Buddhism (44%)
14. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (38%)
15. Scientology (37%)
16. Hinduism (34%)
17. New Thought (34%)
18. Jainism (33%)
19. Seventh Day Adventist (33%)
20. Baha'i Faith (31%)
21. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (31%)
22. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (31%)
23. Eastern Orthodox (28%)
24. Islam (28%)
25. Orthodox Judaism (28%)
26. Roman Catholic (28%)
27. Jehovah's Witness (20%)

I find it interesting I've more in common with Christian Science than with Roman Catholicism, which I was quite serious about until about 18 months ago or so (Off-topic-ish, does anyone still remember me as a Catholic? If so, um, we need to talk, OK?). But all-in-all, secular humanism is probably the closest to my feelings, so it got that right.

And the Unitarian Universalism was a bit confusing until I looked it up and it turns out they believe in pretty much everything, including nothing. Which makes it a very wide net to catch beliefs under.

UU is great. They're pretty accepting of just about everything, very liberal overall. If I were gong to go for an organized religion, I'd go with them.

I've taken this a few times over a few years. I always get Neo-Pagan. Which is good, because I am.

I haven't taken this yet, but I also wanted to throw in that our commitment ceremony was done by a UU minister and I became quite impressed with UU over the course of talking to him and preparing our wedding. The UU Wedding ceremony guide book he gave us had parts from all sorts of ceremonies, and as a result ours ended up being a mix of Pagan, Jewish, and Christian ceremonies all rolled into one, without a single mention of any sort of god anywhere - seeing as Lindsey and I are both atheists. I read through some of the booklets for the services he gives at the... well, I guess it's still a church, and they were absolutely fascinating. Enough where talking about it now is striking up my interest to do a lot more research of UU and what not.

Edit: Haha, speaking of which:

1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
2. Neo-Pagan (87%)
3. New Age (85%)
4. Theravada Buddhism (85%)
5. Liberal Quakers (83%)
6. Mahayana Buddhism (82%)
7. Secular Humanism (81%)
8. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (73%)
9. Taoism (66%)
10. New Thought (66%)

Very interesting.

The fact that Quakers ranked so highly on my list amused me somewhat, but all in all this order really doesn't surprise me, other than the fact my Nontheist ranking is as low as it is.

18. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (31%)
19. Hinduism (28%)
20. Orthodox Judaism (23%)
21. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (21%)

24. Seventh Day Adventist (15%)
25. Eastern Orthodox (10%)
26. Jehovah's Witness (10%)
27. Roman Catholic (10%)

I find it funny that I was raised Catholic, and it happened to come out the lowest. XD

I identify as a very nontraditional liberal Christian with some wide wiggle-room for unknowns. I guess the closest denomination for me is United Church of Christ, though I've never attended one of their services. Jesus' teachings and self-sacrifice are the core of my religious leanings, and communion is something that is personally very sacred. I'm just too darned lazy to dress up on a Sunday morning and attend a lecture and sing badly. I also do not take the Bible as a sacred inerrant text but rather as a cultural history of the people and the Christian faith - it has some good guidelines as well as things I think are cruel, unnecessary, and outdated. :P I was raised UU (and then my parents found a Presbyterian church that is VERY UU-like with an awesome minister when the local UU church went to the stupids).

I'm 74% Scientologist?! Anyhow, interesting set of results for a girl who tends to write "Something Or Other" in the "Religion" box on forms. I think it's wrong about the Buddhism, though: I looked at the page and it doesn't really match that well.

Interesting. I knew what I believed sort of coincided with Buddhism, but I'd never actually looked into it all that seriously.

Usually I've gotten Neo-Pagan more. Interesting. I self-identify as atheist. Maybe I should convert?

I'm not surprised by the results as I would consider myself to be an atheist. (who was Christened as a child - is it wrong to grow up and not believe in it?) I found myself agreeing with the points on Secular Humanism, I guess I'm not a very spiritual person.

The article on secular humanism does fit with a lot of what I think...well, except the afterlife bit. That and a lack of anything to do with spirituality.

Agnostic, btw.
