Mysterious new message
I apologize for posting this in the suggestion forum, but it seemed like the closest to forum related questions.
I haven't posted here in a while, though I still lurk occasionally, and I just received an email that I had a new message. It claims to be from "profilicus", but I don't seem to have such a message in my box, nor will the "1 new message" clear.
Thanks!

I also got this message tody. The subject line was ' I am a spammer. Do no click on any of the links I send you.'
Needless to say I did't open it. It's probably a bot. :s

Ohh, was wondering why it said I had a message when I didn't. Silly spammers, when will they learn.

Re: Mysterious new message
Yeah, sorry guys - while the post approval queue appears to be working well in stopping spam on the forums, we had a spambot today send out PMs as often as the flood limit would let him. I deleted the PMs via the database so no-one would actually see the spam, but this does leave a mess of notification emails and the flag that there's a new PM. He'd sent out about 300 before I became aware of this and stopped him - I'm going to guess this account specifically didn't get a PM because I'd have the power to stop him sending any more, so it was a while before I was aware of what was happening.
The PMs were all originally titled Forum Administration, which I filtered to change that to a warning that the messages were spam, which explains the slightly odd titles for those of you who saw that!

Hahaha! Well, at least the one in my inbox indeed had an amusing title like stated here. I almost don't want to delete it because of that. Of course, I didn't click the link within.
And I was hoping it would be some nice informative/exciting thing someone sent me related to my September move and/or cellphone services.

Re: Mysterious new message
I never got to actually see the PM here but I have the "you have 1 new message" at the top. Will that go away by itself after awhile or is there something I should do to get it to go away?

Re: Mysterious new message
I've just had a rummage in the database to try and fix that - I can't tell if it worked because I didn't get the PM, so if people who did could have a look and let me know, that'd be handy
edit: mrrrr. Remember when I said he'd sent out 250? Well, I'm up to about 1,800 right now. Looks like part of the problem is that the PMs actually sent out vs the number the database thinks should have been don't match up.

Nope, the message is still there.
Sorry you have to deal with this Jazzy, I can only imagine how much fun this must be.

Re: Mysterious new message
If you click the "1 new message", does it change to "0 new messages" once it's loaded the inbox? If you've already tried this, make sure to try it again, because I've just deleted another lot of spam PMs/database references I'd missed.

If you're that offended by having to log in, I'd be perfectly happy to delete your account for you. No point me wasting my time to fix problems for people who are then just going to complain that I did. Would you have preferred the spam?
