Neocolours' News Updates

Tyrannian and Biscuit Gelert

The Biscuit Gelert seems to have taken a leaf out of the Biscuit Aisha's book and is very plain, almost more like a Sand pet than anything else. There's not much else to say.

The Tyrannian Gelert, by contrast, has a lot going on - wings, thick fur, horns, teeth, claws, a green kilt! It's not bad, exactly, but it is very busy. The body has nice stripes, and the head area looks almost as though the Gelet had been bitten by a werelupe, but in a cool way. The horns, and especially the wings, are a bit baffling. I suppose horns might be more primitive, but Tyrannian isn't like Darigan or Faerie - both of which give wings - and there's not a lot of reasons for the wings to be there.

Mutant Uni

Many people were calling for a Mutant Uni, and the call was heeded - though not, perhaps, in the way most folks had hoped. The on-going consensus seems to be that the Mutant Uni has very cool features that, illogically, seem to not work together at all. The wings are nicely veined, it has a nice, wild mane, twisted horn, clawed feet, draconian head, and single eye. The latter two features look vaguely like those of a cyodrake. Overall it's probably not the worst or the best Mutant pet out there.

Jelly Uni

Yet another really dull pet day- made worse by there being only one colour. Just like Wocky day, there is rumoured to be a Mutant coming and images of the transmogrification potion have been found, but only one pet was announced in the news.

The Jelly Uni does not make up for the lack of a second pet. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm really bored of the food colours. Still, this is going for the three-in-one option: it can fool you into thinking it's Snot or Glowing instead. Not that either of those colours would be any more inspiring. Compared to other Jelly pets released in the last couple of years, the Uni is more opaque, instead of the translucency which Jelly needs to look realistic. It does have shading and highlights for shininess, but something about it is just not convincing me that it's made of jelly.

If anything, the most interesting Uni day news was the armour clothing items, which work quite well on a quad pet- although I can't work out what's happened to the knee on its right foreleg- why is the knee guard part of the armour twisted around like that?

Strawberry and Gold Mynci

Strawberry is pretty hideous. It's not that the colour green they chose is bad, but there's simply far too much of it. The tail tip I could see, but the underbelly should have been some other colour. Pink, perhaps - or cream, or something other than green.

Gold is gold. It's nice and shiny and of the right hue not to look too yellow. The only thing somewhat disconcerting to me are the darker, brownish eyes. I think they might have done better as a shade or two lighter, but this is a minor annoyance at best. It really looks pretty decent overall, but there really isn't anything spectacular that can be done with Gold.

Ice and Silver Tonu

Ice and Silver are probably not the colours people were hoping for on this year's Tonu day- Royal, probably, or maybe Maraquan. However, they are not as boring as you might think at first glance.

Ice is the more interesting of the two, and has been done with some thought. It is not in the style of the the smooth ice sculptures of late, but the blocky, chunky Tonu has a body shape which does mean that modelling it from ice is more plausible (excepting the tail, which doesn't look terribly likely to stay on). The shiny horn contrasts nicely with the jaggedy ruff/mane. I'm not quite so sure about the legs and body, because they look more like the work of a very inept ice sculptor. It is nice to see an ice pet which is not just pale blue and shiny, though.

Silver is more dull, except that obviously it is actually quite shiny- that being the only distinction from grey, practically. The most noticeable thing about it for me is the lack of hair, and the bald top of the head is really rather ugly. Hopefully this is just a temporary mistake and it will be put on there at a later point.

Darigan and Speckled Chia

The Speckled Chia is fairly meh. There have been Specled pets in the past that have had more naturalistic-looking spots and, while it seems there had been a halfhearted attempt at the base of the Speckled Chia, it generally looks polka-dotted.

Darigan is surprisingly good. The colour is typical of Darigan pets, but it works here. The spikes leading from the spiky hair look really nice, though the one close to the elbow looks a bit odd. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be on the back or on the elbow itself. The wings do not look tact-on, which is definitely a bonus. The vampire fangs, horns, and claws on the feet work together well, though I think that if they wanted the squinty eyes to be menacing they should have curved them down instead of up.

Skunk and Snot Lennies

Many years ago, the Lenny was one of the least popular pets, unloved and ugly. Then, it got some beautiful colours inspired by real life birds (the Pink Lenny flamingo, for example, and the peacock Faerie) and its popularity grew. The potential new colours for Lenny Day included Maraquan and Zombie, both of which could have been very interesting. Sadly, we got Skunk and Snot.

The Skunk Lenny is unusual, in that it is not black. For some reason, the artist has chosen to make the base colour grey- a very odd choice to make. It does not look bad, exactly, but it isn't what we expect from Skunk. Also, many of us would have hoped for the markings to resemble a real life species of bird with black and white feathers.

Snot is always a colour I have a problem reviewing- firstly, because snot is disgusting and secondly because I never know if the pet is meant to be made wholly from snot or if it is simply a pet covered in snot. The Snot Lenny looks fairly gungy, moreso than Grarrl which was the last Snot pet to be released. The puddle by its foot is slightly odd as it obscures the shape of the foot rather a lot (and will probably be difficult when it comes to putting any footwear items of clothing on the pet).

Zombie and Chocolate Zafara

The Chocolate Zafara is pretty nice overall. The brown is medium and it has a nice white chocolate chest and reasonable use of swirls. The spikes on its back have sprinkles, which is also a nice touch. The whip-cream hairdo with sprinkles is, perhaps, typical but I sort of wish it were differently shaped. It reminds me a bit of Digimon poo...

The Zombie is also pretty okay overall. It has a fairly typical skin color and the marks of stitches on its tails. I'm not sure what the marks in the large tear on the pants are supposed to represent. My guess would be either unraveled stitching or cobwebs, but it could be marks on the skin. The odd part about the Zombie Zafara is that its muzzle and underbelly are a darker colour than the skin. This gives it almost an unshaven look, as if it somehow has a five o' clock shadow. I suppose this is okay, but I'd have much rather had it on the Pirate Zafara.

Biscuit and Zombie Kacheeks

After a very lacklustre Biscuit Aisha, the Biscuit Kacheek goes back to the usual chocolate chip approach. The chips on the chest looked rather like a paw print to me when I first saw it, which would have been a little odd, but it is otherwise a fairly standard Biscuit pet. Not exciting, but it does the job.

The Zombie Kacheek captures the colour very well: it is genuinely creepy (which is unusual in a Neopet), though that is mostly the mouth. The dark eyes are different to the other Zombie pets (which are all white with tiny dots for pupils) and the skin is detailed with spots and veins. Its is simple, but also detailed. It is not the sort of pet that I like, however, I think it is a good example of Zombie as a colour.

Baby Krawk and Baby Lutari

The Krawk: Besides the fact that the baby form ought to, in theory, resemble the petpet they come from, the 'hair' seems strange and the eyes are a bit too large-looking somehow. The overall colouring is okay and the bib and diapers are nice touches, but it looks more like a baby alien lizard than a Baby Krawk to me.

The Lutari: Much like their adult counterparts the Baby Lutari is rather uninspiring. There is something just wrong with the position of their back legs and tail, and the random fist does not help. The head, especially the muzzle, looks really odd. The colour is reminiscent of Red (though it's not too uncommon for Baby pets to share the colours of adults) but still, not very inspiring.

Silver and Chocolate Elephante

The Silver Elephante did not turn out too badly. It's appropriately shiny and has a nice saturation. There's really not much else to it, though. The Chocolate Elephante is also rather plain. In fact it almost looks like Brown more than Chocolate. The wings have nice toppings and the whip cream and cherry hat is nice, but the body would have benefited from swirls or candy corn toes or similar. Other thought may be made here.

Ghost and Shadow Buzz

After last year's Buzz day colours (Pirate and Snow) this year's look very plain and simple. There were, however, very few potentially interesting colours remaining for the Buzz, so it was to be expected.

Ghost fulfils the most basic requirements of a Ghost pet on Neopets: it has the classic pale blue-grey body and red eyes. There is no ghostly aura (which is potentially problematic when it comes to clothing) and no change in facial expression. It is hard to see how the expression could be changed without it becoming identical to the sad pose- the insect anatomy doesn't lend itself very well to expressive faces.

Shadow is equally basic, but it has never been a complex colour. The Buzz follows the set colour scheme of black body and blue eyes exactly.

Speckled and Grey Gnorbus

The Speckled Gnorbu turned out very nicely. It has a dark green mane on a medium green body that work together well. They tried really hard to make the speckles themselves look realistic, though the ones towards the muzzle look a bit odd to me. Grey is... well... typically Grey, especially post customization. The basic colors are okay, but aside from the frown there's not a lot to differ it from other Gnorbus. I will, however, give credit for a nicely greasy-looking mane. I've never really understood the dirty pink they also use for the colour. I know it's supposed to remind people of bloodshot eyes from too much crying, but it always makes the pets look like they've just finished doing drugs...

Biscuit and Custard Aishas

Firstly, I feel that I should apologise: this is not news. We already knew that there were only two colours left for Aishas, and unless one of the species-specific colours was used (like Clay) or a new one was invented for the Aisha (and they already have Alien), we would be getting Biscuit and Custard. And we did.

It seems like the artist given the task of drawing them wasn't thrilled with the prospect either, because there's no evidence of imagination or innovation here. Biscuit is vaguely biscuit coloured, with no decoration or chocolate chips, and Custard is sort of custard coloured, with only the vaguest hint of a gloopy liquid on its body. This is the first Custard pet since Customisation, so it wasn't clear what we should expect. I don't like the oozy, drippy look (but then, food pets have never appealed to me at all) and the Custard Aisha is less horrible than most custard pets, but it's almost just a creamy yellow colourfill, rather defeating the object of having a pet made from custard.

And finally, the icing on the cake: the collars are identical to the basic Aisha collars, so they aren't even worth painting for that. Let's hope that this unpromising start to 2010 is not a precedent for the rest of the year...

Snow and Desert Ogrin

Thanks to the long holiday the Ogrin came out a bit late. For all that the two colours are an interesting choice. Snow is, of course, entirely appropriate for this time of year (at least in the northern hemisphere). They seem to have taken a leaf (or maybe I should say leaves) from the Snow Peophin without the addition of the random snow splotch. The eyes, however, are lumps of coal that just look a bit weird and creepy.

The Desert Ogrin is an interesting choice for a second colour, given that the Lost Desert is almost the opposite of any sort of snowy environment. The browns are nicely subdued and the overall clothing is pretty neat. The headband, however, seems oddly shaped to me, looking almost like like modern captain's hat (if unusually coloured).
