Joey's Jack-o-Lantern Thread, 2009 Version [Halloween Pics!]
It's that time of year! The glorious time when I spam my very own thread with lots of examples of the silly things I do with fruit in my free time! As usual, bigger pictures and older carvings are on my deviantart page.
First up this year is a late summer watermelon. I've wanted to carve like crazy all weekend but pumpkins aren't out, so I went with a watermelon since they were on sale. It's Leafeon, because once upon a time I promised someone I'd carve all the eeveelutions on watermelons.
And so you can actually see all the mad shading I did:
More to come through Halloween!

Joey, how I would kill to have a skill like that! I adore Leafron's head, especially those ears. So cute!
Wanna donate towards my drink gallery, the Golden Goblet.

Re: Joey's Jack-o-Lantern Thread, 2009 Version [Watermelons :D]
It's not all that hard, just takes some practice :D I've done well over 50 of these things over the years. I say just go ahead and give it a try and see how it turns out!
And I've got more for this weekend. I was out of town for talk like a pirate day, but I made up for it doubly this weekend, first with a lovely not dead parrot on my last watermelon:
and since every good pirate needs a ship, my first pumpkin:
This one I've actually done before, back in 04, but I never got any pictures before it went fuzzy on me. Good to do it again, I think it's even better this time around.

Re: Joey's Jack-o-Lantern Thread, 2009 Version [Pirate Style]
Double Post because I've got more pumpkins!
First up, Serenity!
Someone on zombie pumpkins posted this stencil in the forum, then disappeared into the ether. I carved it though, and it is awesome. Not sure it was originally supposed to be shaded though, but I love shading things too much.
And to start off the pokemon pumpkins of the year:
I cut loose my hardcore shading skills on this one, and I think it paid off. Totally hated it the whole time I was carving it though. It's not good to bust out a 2 and a half hour carving at midnight. I count myself lucky that I only lost one tooth.
I also fiddled around with baking the seeds, after I burnt the ones last week. Raikou had small seeds so I covered them with sugar and cinnamon before baking, they turned out interesting, but I'll have to play with the ratios next time. Serenity had nice big seeds so I gave em my usual salt/cayenne but let them marinate for a bit, and they turned out heavenly.

:D Thanks guys! I may take you up on that proposal, Enri, I watched the first 8 episodes while carving this weekends pair! It's such a fantastic show!
To fit with our sweep of the Red Sox Sunday morning, I carved up this beauty the night before:
And since you probably sensed a theme coming:
Entei makes for an awesome pumpkin.

Re: Joey's Jack-o-Lantern Thread, 2009 Version [Pkmn + Baseball]
Well, pretty much everything I know about pumpkin carving is here: http://www.zombiepumpkins.com/tips.php aside from the shading. Which is basically peeling off the layers of pumpkin skin without cutting all the way through. After that, all I've got is about 60 pumpkins and 7 years experience under my belt, and some really fancy tools :D
So in a universe turning against me moment, a nice big pumpkin I had picked up last weekend to use this weekend has totally rotted through. I found this out right after breaking two of my violin's strings, so I blame a curse.

Re: Joey's Jack-o-Lantern Thread, 2009 Version [Pkmn + Baseball]
Now for Round 4!
First up is a little castle from Pumpkinglow.com:
I made the mistake of trying it on a pumpkin that was way too small, so a lot of things broke and it didn't turn out as nice as I'd like, but it's still pretty.
Next is my obligatory pokemon of the week:
Suicune, to round off the Beast Trio. I actually hate suicune, it's cry is a constant reminder of my absolute failure to catch running legendaries without a masterball. But the pumpkin turned out rather well. Though it doesn't seem as suited to a pumpkin, being a water-type. Also of note is that THIS THING IS HUGE!!! Somehow I picked up a 22 pounder to carve this on, and even gutted and carved it's heavy.
And finally, I did the logo for the Kansas City Chiefs football team. I'm not hugely attached to it so I'll just link if you care to see: http://joh-wee.deviantart.com/art/Kansa ... -140758704
I couldn't care less about football, or the Chiefs, but my dad is a huge fan, and I made this for him. And apparently they won this weekend, so that's something.

Suicune is my favorite of the legendary dogs. So pretty! Yay ribbon-tail-things!

Oh god, tell your dad I am SO so sorry he is a fan of the Chiefs. Like, immensely sorry. They finally won? I'm glad they gave him something to smile about.... finally, haha.
Suicune is my favorite of the dogs too (Sorry, Joey xD) - the shading on that one is REALLY lovely, especially like Ty said on all the ribbons and its..'hair' :D

I realized I have not yet posted how insanely cool your pumpkins are. Consider it posted.
